founding of georgia
james oglethorpe
James Oglethorpe was born into a wealthy family. He was a British General, member of parliament, and the founder of the colony Georgia. He hoped to resettle Britain's poor, especially those in debtors' prisons, in the New World so that there wouldn't be so many. This idea to colonize a new colony was because Oglethorpe had a friend named Robert Castell. He went to prison because he did not pay his taxes. Oglethorpe didn't like and hated it when he found out that his friend had died in that prison because it was unsanitary. Thats why he wanted to create a new colony. King George gave him the permission to set this new colony but it had to have rules set before they went. Oglethorpe and the first colonists arrived at South Carolina on the ship Ann in late 1732, and settled near the present site of Savannah, Georgia on 12 February 1733. He negotiated with the Yamacraw tribe for land and established (Oglethorpe became great friends with Chief Tomochichi, who was the chief of the Yamacraw) a series of forts. Then after the war of Jenkins ear he returned to Georgia and got married and never went back to Georgia again.
charter of 1732
The charter of 1732 was when KIng George gave permission to Oglethorpe to settle in.James Oglethorpe and 22 trustee came to georgia on the ship The Anne. The trustees were there to create laws of the new colony Georgia. The purpose of the charter was to keep the colony of Georgia under control because it was a social experiment. The charter's most important rules are that there were no catholics allowed in Georgia. It also did not allow blacks in because they believed it would start slavery and women weren't allowed to own land. Some other ones were there had to be a common council, no liquor or liquor dealers (alcohol), the colonists must grow mulberry trees because silk worms ate their leaves and England wanted to make silk, no lawyers because they wanted the colonists to settle their problems one on one instead of in court, and a land limit of 500 acres.
reasons for settlement
They made this colony so it could be used as a defense buffer for the Carolina s so the Spanish couldn't attack it. Oglethorpe also wanted to free some debtors in jail in England and use them in a new colony and people who suffered in jail. They used it for Charity for England, and more economics and trade for England.
tomochichi
Chief Tomochichi was the leader of the Yamacraw Indians. When Oglethorpe arrived he let them settle near the Savannah River. Oglethorpe and the Chief could not talk because they each spoke different languages so the used a women named Mary Musgrove to help translate the two. Chief Tomochichi became really good friends and Tomochichi learned a little English. During the first five years of English settlement, Tomochichi provided invaluable assistance to the new colony. One year after Oglethorpe's arrival, the Indian chief accompanied him back to England along with a small delegation of family and Lower Creek tribesmen. There, Tomochichi expertly fulfilled the position as mediator for his people during numerous meetings with important English dignitaries. He politely followed English mannerisms in his public appearances while pushing for recognition and realization of the demands of his people for education and fair trade. Upon his return to Georgia, Tomochichi met with other Lower Creek chieftains to reassure them of the honest intentions of these new Englishmen and convinced them to ally with the English despite previous deceitful encounters with their northern neighbors in South Carolina.
mary musgrove
Mary Musgrove was a colonial American translator and negotiator of mixed Yamacraw and English people. She helped in the development of Colonial Georgia and became an important person between Muscogee Creek Indians and the English colonists. She spent most of her childhood straddling the two worlds of her Creek village, Coweta, and the colony of South Carolina. During these years she learned to speak the Creek language of Muskogee as well as English, and she learned firsthand about the deerskin trade and the different customs and expectations of colonial and Native American societies.
