32b - evaluate the impact of European contact on Native American cultures including Spanish missions along the barrier islands, and the exploration of Hernando DeSoto
the natives come to a end
SPANISH missions
The Spanish missions were made to help convert native people to the religion of a country that planned on colonizing an area. One of the reasons for the Spanish to do the missions was to get the Indians to work like slaves. They would do this so that they could obtain the land. Up to 300 mission Indians from across Spanish Florida were drafted annually for work between March and September, causing considerable change in the native societies. Workers often caught and spread epidemic diseases during their terms of service, and sometimes they died as an indirect result of overwork and exhaustion. Over the course of time the native population dropped quick. Missions were abandoned and raids started and retreated all Coastal Missions to the Barrier Islands.
Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who participated in the conquests of Central America and Peru and discovered the Mississippi River. He found where the Native Americans where and was the reason that they died. The Europeans brought diseases that killed many of them and they had guns and horse to kill them easier. He would would get the rest of the natives and use them as slaves. 90% of the natives were wiped out, the natives had never seen steel weapons they had all woods ones. that's on of the reason the native couldnt defend there self.
